Question

What evidences come from homologous organs and analogous organs in favor of evolution?

Open in App
Solution

Homologous organs:

  1. Organs that have different functions but similar structures are known as homologous organs.
  2. They share a common ancestor.
  3. They are formed due to divergent evolution and because of their structural and evolutionary similarities, all vertebrates have common ancestors.
  4. Human, whale, and bat forelimbs, for example, have similar structures but have different purposes.
  5. As a result, homologous organs support evolution.

Analogous structure:

  1. Analogous structures are organs that have different basic structures but perform the same comparable functions.
  2. The wings of a bird and an insect have different structures but execute the same function of flying through the air.
  3. These organisms would have to adapt to the same ecological niche as other organisms. Hence, they may have evolved similar (analogous) organs.
