Question

What factors influence transpiration?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The process by which excess water from the plant body is expired is referred to as transpiration.
  2. It occurs generally through the evaporation of water from the surface of the leaves.
  3. During the process of transpiration, water molecules present in the plant tissues are removed from the aerial parts of the plants.
  4. Only a small amount of water absorbed by the plants is utilized in growth and development. The rest is eliminated via transpiration.

The rate of transpiration is influenced by factors as given below:

  1. Temperature – Increase in temperature with an increase in transpiration rate.
  2. Light intensity – With increasing light intensity, the transpiration rate also increases.
  3. Humidity – This decreases with an increasing transpiration rate
  4. Movement of air – This increases with an increasing transpiration rate
