The factors causing losses of grains during storage are:

Abiotic factor

  1. Abiotic factors are referred to all the non living components like physical conditions (pH, temperature, sunlight ,humidity).
  2. Abiotic factors are independent of biotic factors
  3. They include improper temperature of storehouse, high moisture content in grains, improper containers for storage of grains causes loss of grains.

Biotic factors

  1. Biotic factors are referred as all the living organism like insects, rodents , birds, mites, fungi bacteria etc.
  2. Biotic Factors depend on abiotic factors for survival and reproduction
  3. They attack on food grains and enzymetic reaction occurs within food grains and causes loss of food grains.
