What force does water exert on the base of a house tank of base area $1.5 m^{2}$ when it is filled with water upto a height of $1 m$ ?
[Density of water is $10^{3} k g m^{- 3}$ and $g = 10 m s^{- 2}]$

Solution

Force exerted at base of tank is equal to weight of water.
Volume of tank $V = A \times H = 1.5 \times 1 = 1.5 m^{3}$
Mass of water in tank $m = v o l u m e \times d e n s i t y$
$m = 1.5 \times 1000 = 1500 k g$
Weight, $W = F = m g = 1500 \times 10 = 15000 N$
