Question

What form of energy conversion take place in generating hydroelectricity?

Open in App
Solution

Energy conversion in generating hydroelectricity :

  1. The water stored in the dam has potential energy.
  2. This water when leaves downstream turns the blade of the turbine and hence potential energy is converted into kinetic energy of rotating blades.
  3. Kinetic energy from the rotating blades of the turbine is further converted into electrical energy by the generator connected to the turbine.

Hence potential energy is converted first into kinetic energy and then kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy in a hydroelectric power plant to generate hydroelectricity.
