As shown in the figure, the big triangle can be seen as divided into 16 small equilateral triangles.

Sometimes the full small equilateral triangle is shaded and sometimes only half of it is shaded as shown.

If we calculate from top to bottom the number of shaded small triangles
are $= (1) + (0.5 + 0.5) + (0.5 + 1 + 0.5) + (0.5 + 0.5 + 0.5 + 1) = 6.5$
