Question
What function do ribosomes serve in polypeptide synthesis?
Open in App
Solution
Ribosomes:
Ribosomes are said to be the site of protein synthesis.
Ribosomes are responsible for holding mRNA and tRNA together.
The smaller subunit binds to the mRNA(messenger) template first followed by the large subunit binding.
It has several active sites that hold tRNA with the growing polypeptide chain and the incoming tRNA bound to an amino acid.
The rRNA( Ribosomal RNA) of the ribosome acts as a ribozyme catalyzing protein synthesis.
