Question

What happen when a mixture of hydrogen(H2) and oxygen(O2) is lit ?

Solution

Answer

  • Hydrogen is a highly reactive fuel.
  • hydrogen molecules(H2) react violently with oxygen(O2), when the existing molecular bonds break and new bonds are formed between oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
  • As the products of the reaction are at a lower energy level than the reactants, the results is an explosive release of energy and production of water.
  • But the hydrogen does not react with oxygen at room temperature, a source of energy is needed to ignite the mixture.

Chemical equation :

2H2(g)+O2(g)lit2H2O(l)
