Solution

  • The Swadeshi movement was one of the most popular movements of the Indian freedom struggle. It was aimed at revival of the domestic products and industries to improve the economic condition of the country.
  • The movement was a reaction to Lord Curzon's decision to partition Bengal
  • The Swadeshi movement espoused boycott of British goods and setting up of own industry of very possible type
  • Khadi became the symbol of the movement. People were urged to use it, instead of British made cloths.
  • Women were urged to wear simple shell bangles rather than glass bangles and discard silk

Though a popular movement, the Swadeshi movement eventually lost steam because only the upper class Indians could afford to buy the relatively expensive India made products as compared to the cheap British goods.
After about fifteen years of the movement, even the upper class Indians went back to the use of British goods since the Indian products could not compete with them in terms of price.
