Dear Student,
In 1956 Sinhala Only Act was passed in Sri Lanka. As per this act, Sinhala was made the official language of Sri Lanka by replacing English. The act did not recognize Tamil as an official language. The Sinhalese viewed it as a step towards building a nation-state whereas Tamils viewed it as an act of minority oppression. This created a divide between the majority Sinhalese people and minority Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Regards,
Priyanka
