Solution

The correct option is B Martial law was imposed

  • The Martial Law was imposed by the Military Council for National Salvation lead in December 1981 by, then, prime minister Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski and consisting of 20 other high ranking military officers.
  • As Poland came under increasing pressure from the Solidarity movement, Jaruzelski was elected premier on Feb. 11, 1981, and first secretary of the party on Oct. 18, 1981, while retaining his post as minister of defense. In an effort to crush the Solidarity movement and restore economic stability, he declared martial law in Poland on Dec. 13, 1981, which was the move was accompanied by mass arrests of Solidarity leaders and political dissidents.
