  1. In small amount
  2. In excess

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Carbon dioxide gas is bubbled through lime water in a small amount

  • Calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) is also called lime water.
  • When carbon dioxide gas is bubbled through lime water in a small amount, it forms milky calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
  • Calcium hydroxide + Carbon dioxide = Calcium carbonate + Water

Ca(OH)2(aq)+CO2(g)CaCO3(s)+H2O

Step 2: Carbon dioxide gas is bubbled through lime water in excess

  • When carbon dioxide gas is added in the excess amount it forms colourless calcium bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2.
  • Calcium carbonate + Carbon dioxide + Water = Calcium bicarbonate

CaCO3(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)Ca(HCO3)2(s)
