Glycogenesis:

  1. The process of synthesis of glycogen from glucose is known as glycogenesis.
  2. Glycogen is the primary energy reserve in animals.
  3. When the glucose is present in sufficient amounts the excess glucose is stored in liver and muscle cells as glycogen.
  4. Glycogenesis occurs when the blood glucose level is high.
  5. Glycogenesis s stimulated by the insulin hormone.

During Glycogenesis:

  1. Glycogen breaks down into glucose-1-phosphate and glucose.
  2. Two enzymes i.e. phosphorylase kinase and glycogen phosphorylase regulate the process.
  3. Glycogenesis provides immediate energy to the body.
  4. Glycogenesis maintains blood glucose levels during fasting.
