Question

What happens during reverse transcription?

Open in App
Solution

Reverse transcription:

  1. Reverse transcription is the process by which the RNA is transcribed into circular DNA (cDNA).
  2. Retroviruses, reverse transcribe their RNA genome and then get inserted into host DNA.
  3. It is also known as RNA-directed DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase is enzymes encoded from the genetic content of the retroviruses catalyzing the transcription of the retrovirus RNA into the DNA.
  4. This process of catalyzed transcription is said to be the reverse process of regular cellular DNA transcription into RNA, and thus the names retrovirus and reverse transcriptase.
  5. Reverse transcriptase is the basic element of performing the RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) too
