Question

What happens if ETC is blocked?

Open in App
Solution

ETC (Electron Transport Chain):

  1. The electron transport chain is defined as a series of redox reactions that occur in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
  2. It is part of aerobic respiration. It is the only phase in glucose metabolism which makes use of atmospheric oxygen.
  3. When electrons are passed from one component to the another until the end of the chain the electrons reduce molecular oxygen thus producing water.
  4. The requirement of oxygen in the final phase could be witnessed in the chemical reaction that involves the requirement of both oxygen and glucose.
  5. If the electron transport chain is blocked it will halt the synthesis of ATP by chemiosmosis.
