Solution

Follicle:

  1. A small sac filled with fluid in the ovary that contains one immature egg is known as a follicle or an ovarian follicle.
  2. An ovary contains thousands of follicles.
  3. Before ovulation, the egg in the follicle detaches itself.
  4. The follicle swells and bursts open to eject the egg and fluid into the abdominal cavity.

If follicle does not burst:

  1. If a follicle does not burst or release its egg it leads to the formation of a cyst.
  2. The cyst continues to grow and gets filled with fluid or blood.
  3. Most cysts are painless and harmless and are not cancerous and resolve on their own in few menstrual cycles.

Prevention of cysts:

  1. Cysts can be prevented by implementing changes in lifestyle.
  2. Maintaining a healthy weight also prevents cysts.
