Copper sulfate is categorized into two forms:

  • Anhydrous copper sulfate
  • Hydrated copper sulfate

Anhydrous copper sulfate:

  • It is white in color having chemical formula CuSO4.
  • It does not contain water in it.

Hydrated copper sulfate:

  • When water is added to the anhydrous copper sulfate solution, then it turns into a hydrated form of copper sulfate.
  • Commonly used hydrated form of copper sulfate is CuSO4.5H2O.
  • It is bright blue in color due to the d-d transitions that take place between the ligands and the central metal atom.
