Question

What happens to the gravitational force between two objects when the distance between them is :

(i) doubled?
(ii) halved?

Open in App
Solution

F=GMmr2
where,
F − gravitational force
G − gravitational constant
M − mass of the earth
m − mass of object
r − distance

(i). r = doubled
F=GMmr2 keeping everything constant i.e. G, M, m
=GMm2r2
=GMm4r2
F becomes one-fourth.

(ii). r = halved

F=GMmr2 keeping everything constant i.e. G, M, m
=GMm1/2r2
=GMm1/4r2
=4GM mr2
F becomes four times the original.
