What happens to the temperature of a substance while it is changing its state?

  1. When any substance changes its state, the temperature remains constant.
  2. It happens so because the amount of heat supplied during the change of state of any substance is utilized to break the intermolecular forces of attraction or other kinds of forces.
  3. For example - When a cube of ice is taken out of the freezer and kept at room temperature in the surrounding, the ice starts melting as it absorb the heat from the external environment. Similarly, if it is kept in the freezer, the water starts freezing. It starts releasing the heat into the surrounding. Thus, in both cases, the temperature remains the same when the heat is absorbed or released.
  4. Thus, the temperature remains constant when a substance changes its state.
