Question

What happens to the width of Depletion layer in forward bias?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When the positive terminal of the source is connected to the p-side and the negative terminal of the n-side the diode is said to be forward-biased.
  2. The p side of the diode is connected to the battery's positive side, and the n side is coupled to its negative side in the forward bias.
  3. The applied voltage is going in the opposite direction of the junction barrier potential.
  4. As a result, the forward-applied voltage helps the electrons in the n area cross the barrier and move into the p region.
  5. The width of the depletion layer in forwarding bias decreases because the electrons are attracted by the positive terminal of the source and hence the negative ions disappear.
  6. The forward bias narrows the depletion region, due to the carriers from the source terminals.
  7. The depletion layer of a diode is substantially thinner while in forwarding bias.
