Question

What happens when a charged plastic straw is brought near another uncharged plastic straw?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Suppose the first straw is positivly charged. When it is brought near the uncharged straw,it will atract the negatively charged electrons in the nearer end of the uncharged straw. Thus the nearer end becomes negatively charged and farther end becomes positivly charged. As they are oppositely charged, the strawas will attract each other.
This process is called charging by induction.
Similarly,if the first straw is negatively charged, it will make the nearer end of the second straw positively charged and farther end becomes negativly charged. As a result, straws will attract each other.

Regards.
