Explanation for shorted diode

  1. The voltage drop reading in the both directions will be the same, when a diode is shorted.
  2. The reason for diode failure are excessive forward current and large reverse voltage.
  3. A diode fails caused by over heating or overvoltage spike causes short circuit in diode.
  4. A very large subthreshold swing implies that the device cannot be turned off. this process called as punch through.
