Question

what happens when a piece of sodium metal is dropped into water?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Sodium metal is very reactive. When dropped in water, it reacts vigorously to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas is evolved. Hydrogen gas catches fire immediately after evolution.

Reaction occurring is:
2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) ------------> 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)

Sodium metal is so reactive that it can react with water vapours present in air. That is why, sodium is kept under kerosene or paraffin to avoid its contact with water vapours.
