What happens when acidified kmno4 is added to KI solution

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Reaction of acidified KMnO4 with KI will be a redox reaction where I will be oxidized and Mn will be reduced. The colour of KMnO4 will be decolourized.
The molecular reaction is as follows-
10KI+8H2SO4+2KMnO4 5I2+ 2MnSO4 +2K2SO4 +8 H2O
The change in oxidation state of Mn is from +7 to +2
Change in oxidation state of I = -1 to 0.
