What happens when Carbon burns in air? Write a balanced equation.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Burning of carbon in the air:

  • When carbon burns in the air, it reacts with the oxygen present in the air to form Carbon dioxide, and a large amount of heat and some light are released.
  • It is an example of a combustion reaction. Combustion is a process in which a substance burns in the presence of oxygen, giving off heat and light.

Part 2: Reaction involved:

  • The equation for the reaction is-
  • C(s)Carbon+O2(g)Oxygenā†’CO2(g)Carbondioxide+heat+light
  • Since the number of atoms is the same on both sides of the reaction, hence, the above equation is a balanced chemical equation.
