Question

What happens when chlorine gas is passed in an aqueous solution containing sodium iodide?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When chlorine is added to sodium iodide the Iodine gets displaced by chlorine.
  2. The reactivity of chlorine is more than that of Iodine hence chlorine easily displaces Iodine from sodium Iodide.
  3. Thus forming sodium chloride.
  4. The reaction is,

2NaI(aq)SodiumIodide+Cl2(g)Chlorine2NaCl(aq)Sodiumchloride+I2(g)Iodine

So when chlorine gas is passed in an aqueous solution containing sodium iodide, iodine is displaced by chlorine from sodium iodide.
