Question

What happens when complex 3 is inhibited?

Open in App
Solution

Complex 3:

  1. Complex 3 is present in the electron transport chain.
  2. It is found in mitochondria.
  3. It is also known as Q-cytochrome C oxidoreductase or cytochrome reductase.
  4. It accepts electrons from ubiquinol.
  5. Later, complex 3 transfers the electrons to another electron carrier called cytochrome C.

Complex 3 inhibitors:

  1. Antimycin is an inhibitor of complex 3.
  2. Antimycin binds to the complex 3 and inhibits electron transfer.
  3. Inhibition of complex 3 stops the electron transport chain.
  4. Thus, ATP synthesis by oxidative phosphorylation is also stopped.
