What happens when copper comes in contact with dilute HCl in the absence of air?
No action on copper will take place.
Dilute acids such as HCl and H2SO4 have no action on copper in the absence of air. Copper dissolves in these acids in the presence of air. The following reactions are as follows:-
2Cu+4HCl+O2(air)→2CuCl2+2H2O
2Cu+2H2SO4+O2(air)→2CuSO4+2H2O
