Question

What happens when crystals of copper nitrate is heated? (write balanced chemical equation)

Open in App
Solution

1. Thermal decomposition reaction:

The decomposition reaction taking place in the presence of heat is termed a thermal decomposition reaction. High temperatures help in breaking down the reactant into further molecules.
2. Reaction of heating of Copper nitrate:

When Copper nitrate crystals are heated, they undergo a decomposition reaction to give Copper oxide and Nitrogen dioxide. The number of atoms is the same on both sides, that is, on the reactant and product sides.
The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is given below.

CuNO3sCuOs+NO2g(Coppernitrate)(Copperoxide)(Nitrogendioxide)
