Question

What happens when dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with crushed egg shells?

Open in App
Solution

Eggshell is made almost entirely of calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) .

And when HCl reacts with crushed egg shell (calcium carbonate ) ,it leads to the production of carbon dioxide-

2HCl + CaCO3 ————-> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

Products formed are - calcium chloride ,water and carbon dioxide.

Formation of carbon dioxide can be checked by reacting it with lime water -

CO2 when react with lime water then -

CO2 + Ca (OH)2 ——————→CaCO3 + H2O

Carbon dioxide when reacts with lime ( calcium hydroxide ) ,calcium carbonate ( which turns the water milky )and water are formed.
