If electrodes are immersed in water, and a current is passed, bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen are produced. Oxygen bubbles forms on the electrode connected to the positive terminal that is the anode of the battery and hydrogen bubbles forms on the negative terminal that is the cathode.

We know that oxygen supports combustion. In this case, when oxygen is released at the anode, bubbles of oxygen react with the anode and causes its wearing faster.
