Question

What happens when ethene combines with hydrogen chloride.

Open in App
Solution

In an organic reaction, the reagent reacts with a reactant molecule to produce an intermediate which is converted into final products.

A chemical reaction in which two or more reactants react together to form a single larger product is called an addition reaction.

The reaction of Ethene (C2H4) and Hydrogen chloride (HCl) forms Chloroethane (CH3CH2Cl) as the major product. This reaction is an addition reaction.

The reaction of Ethene and Hydrogen chloride is written as:

CH2=CH2+H-ClCH3-CH2-Cl(ethene)(hydrogen(chloroethane)chloride)
