What happens when food reaches the stomach?
Stomach muscles contract at regular intervals to churn the food.
In the stomach, food is thoroughly mixed with digestive juices by a vigorous, to-and-fro churning motion. This motion is caused by contractions of strong muscles in the stomach walls. Digestive juices produced in the stomach's tiny sacs help digest the food. The stomach serves as a storage tank for food. Food in the stomach is discharged slowly into the small intestine. The stomach also helps in digestion of the food.
