What happens when magnesium is burnt in air and the products X and Y treated with water?
Magnesium reacts with air to form oxide and nitride. On reaction with water the oxide gives hydroxide and nitride gives hydroxide and ammonia.
2Mg+O2→2MgO
3Mg+N2→Mg3N2
MgO+H2O→Mg(OH)2
Mg3N2+H2O→3Mg(OH)2+2NH3
