Question

What happens when CO2 gas is passed through lime water for a long time?

Open in App
Solution

When carbon dioxide combines with limewater, a colorless solution of calcium hydrogen carbonateCa(HCO3)2 is formed.

Lime water - A saturated aqueous solution of calcium hydroxideCa(OH)2 is known as limewater.

The steps in the reaction of lime water and CO2 gas

Ca(OH)2(aq)+CO2(g)CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)CaCO3(s)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)Ca(HCO3)2(aq)

This reaction can be used as a test to detect the production of CO2 gas in a reaction. At first, calcium carbonate(CaCO3) precipitates as a white solid giving the mixture a milky appearance. Then on adding more CO2 gas the solution becomes colorless due to the formation of calcium hydrogen carbonate Ca(HCO3)2

Therefore, when CO2 gas is passed through lime water for a long time a colorless solution of calcium hydrogen carbonateCa(HCO3)2 is formed.
