Question

What happens when sewage mixes with the water body?

Open in App
Solution

Mixing of sewage:

  1. Sewage is wastewater that is discharged from residences, hospitals, industries, offices, and other locations.
  2. Rainwater that runs down the streets during a storm is also included in sewage.
  3. Many dangerous compounds are present in the water that runs off the roadways and rooftops.
  4. When sewage mixes with the water body, microbes present in it degrade the organic matter of sewage using oxygen.
  5. This results in a sharp decline in dissolved oxygen (DO) in water bodies which may lead to the death of aquatic animals and plants.
  6. Also, the water becomes unsafe for drinking.
