What happens when SO2 gas is mixed with water?

Open in App
Solution

Normally oxides of nonmetals are found to be acidic. Hence when SO₂ is dissolved in water,sulphurous acid is obtained.

SO₂ + H₂O——->H₂SO₃
The resulting acid is the weakly dibasic acid sulphurous acid(H₂SO₃).
