What happens when the magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygn

The magnesium burns in air with white flame and when oxygen burns the flame becomes blinding white. At the end of this reaction a thin thread of white powder occures.

The chemical reaction is following:

Magnesium + Oxygen = magnesium oxide

2 Mg (s) + O2 (g) → 2 MgO (s)
