Question

What happens when the members of the same genus but different species interbreed?

Open in App
Solution

Members of different species belonging to the same genus can interbreed, but they usually produce sterile/infertile offspring. The offspring usually has characteristics of both the parents. The offspring are not very short-lived.

The most well-known example is that of the mule, which is the product of a cross between a male donkey (Equus asinus) and a female horse (Equus caballus).
