Question

What happens when the temperature of the solution is increased?

Open in App
Solution

Relation of average kinetic energy with temperature:

  • The average kinetic energy of the molecules that make up a solution increases as the temperature of the solution rises.
  • Because of the increase in kinetic energy, the solvent molecules can more effectively break apart the solute molecules that are locked together by intermolecular interactions.
  • If dissolution is an endothermic process, The solubility of solid solute increases as the temperature rises as per Le- Chatelier's Principle.
  • As the temperature rises, the solubility of all gases decreases as the solute gases start moving up.

Factors affecting solubility:

  • Solubility refers to the amount of a chemical that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature. Solubility is influenced by two direct factors: temperature and pressure.
  • Temperature affects the solubility of solid and gas but only the solubility of gases is affected by pressure.
  • The solubility of a gas in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid at a given temperature, according to Henry's law.
