Question

What happens when two atoms form a chemical bond ?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A chemical bond is an attractive force that holds various atoms/ions together in different species.
  2. It is formed by the atom transfer or by sharing of electrons to complete the octet of the outermost shell.
  3. It is formed to achieve the stable nucleus configuration and will form a molecule.
  4. Chemical bond formation is a type of force of attraction that maximizes the stability of the compound.
  5. The exchange of atoms results in covalent bond formation.
  6. Also, there might be other types of bond formation ie. Ionic bond, Covalent bond, Vander waal bond, metallic bond, etc.
  7. The negative and positive ions formed during ionic bond will try to attain stable noble gas configurations.
  8. For example: The formation of Sodiumchloride(NaCl)
  9. NaNa++e-[Ne]3s1[Ne]Cl+e-Cl-[Ne]3s23p5[Ar]Na++Cl-NaCl
