Question

What happens when vinegar reacts with sodium carbonate

Open in App
Solution

Sodium carbonate is a basic salt.. While vinegar is acidic.. So neutralization reaction is carried out that leads to the formation of a salt, sodium acetate and carbon dioxide and water is formed along with it. Quickly it fizzes for awhile at the starting of reaction, Due to the formation of carbon dioxide bubbles and bursting at the surface.
When the reaction has finished, the white precipitate of sodium acetate is seen under, the CO2 is dispersed into the air and the water is a fairly clear liquid.
Na2CO3(sodium carbonate + (CH3COOH)2 (vinegar ).
= 2CH3COONa (sodium acetate)+ CO2 + H2O
