Question

What happens when white light is passed from air to glass prism?

Open in App
Solution

White light is passed from air to glass prism:

  1. white light undergoes dispersion, the phenomenon in which light is separated into its constituent wavelengths of different colours which get refracted differently.
  2. These colours are arranged in a definite order according to their speeds in the medium of prism.
  3. Various spectrums of light move at different rates through the glass when it is illuminated. Short wavelength spectrums are slowed significantly almost as much as long-wavelength spectrums.
  4. Light is refracted when it has been delayed when it penetrates a medium. That is, it alters course. The slower it is, the closer it will be to the "normal line." As a result, slower light bends upwards of quicker light.

Therefore, when white light is passed from air to glass prism it will undergoes dispersion.
