Solution

(i) Sodium ethanoate is heated with soda lime.

Soda lime is manufactured by adding sodium hydroxide solution to solid calcium oxide (quicklime). It is essentially a mixture of sodium hydroxide, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. It comes as white granules.

When sodium ethanoate is heated with soda lime, methane gas is produced.

CH3COONa + NaOH CH4 + Na2CO3

(ii) When ethanoic acid CH3COOH is warmed with methanolCH3OH in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, pleasant ester methyl ethanoate CH3COOCH3 is formed. This reaction is known as esterification.

CH3COOH + CH3OH conc.H2SO4−−−−−− CH3COOCH3 + H2O
