Question

What happens when zinc granules are added to dilute nitric acid and sodium hydroxide?

Open in App
Solution

a) Zinc reacts with very dil. HNO3 (6%) and is oxidised to Zn(NO3)2 and nitric acid is reduced to ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3).

Reaction : 4Zn + 10HNO3 (very dilute ) -----> 4Zn(NO3)2 + NH4NO3 + 3H2O

Zn(NO3)2 - Zinc nitrate

b) When zinc granules are added to sodium hydroxide, formation of sodium zincate takes place. Evolution of hydrogen gas is observed.
Chemical reaction:
2Zn + NaOH Na2ZnO2 + H2
