Industrial effluents when discharged into water or land cause deposition of toxic chemicals that cause water and soil pollution respectively. Industrial effluents include toxic metals like mercury, lead, phenols, ethylene, formaldehyde, etc. These chemicals choke soil and plants cannot grow in it. If these chemicals enter various food chains, they can cause threat to human health.
