To remove any discrimination between son and daughter in the inheritance of parents property, the Government of India amended the existing law. The new law is called the The Hindu Succession Amendment Act 2005.
This new law has benefited women in the following ways:
1. The new law gave women the right to inherit their family properties. Earlier, once a woman was married, she could not stay or inherit her family house and other properties. Also an unmarried girl had the right to only live in the house and not inherit it. But now women can inherit and/or ask for partition of the family properties.
2. It gave them equal rights as men on agricultural land in all states of India.
Thus, the new law has greatly benefited Indian women as they can now inherit properties and not be dependent on anyone else.
