Question

What hormone stimulates Sertoli cells?

Open in App
Solution

The hormone stimulating Sertoli cells:

  1. Sertoli cells respond to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secreted by the pituitary gland located in the brain. The pituitary gland is stimulated to release FSH through the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus.
  2. The cell membrane of Sertoli cells is associated with FSH receptors that regulate cellular responses; FSH regulates proliferation and gene expression in Sertoli cells.
  3. In response to FSH stimulation, Sertoli cells produce and secrete activin and inhibitory enzymes. Activin and inhibin play an important role in regulating the release of FSH from the pituitary gland and play a role in a negative feedback loop that regulates FSH production.
  4. In addition, as a result of FSH stimulation, many other substances and nutrients are released from Sertoli cells to aid in sperm production.
