Question

What impact did French Revolution have on slave trade?

Open in App
Solution

Initially, the revolutionary government of France did not ban slavery or the slave trade for fear of opposition from businessmen whose income depended on the slave trade. But in 1794, the French government banned slavery in France and all its overseas territories. It also banned French involvement in the slave trade. But this ban lasted only for ten years. When Napoleon became Emperor, he overturned the ban in 1804 and reintroduced slavery.
