Question

What impact takes place on metal complex due to transition of an electron in [Ti(H2O)6]3+?

Open in App
Solution

[Ti(H2O)6]3+ has 3d1 as outer electronic configuration. When energy is supplied, this d electron is transferred from lower t2g level to upper eg level.
The wavelength of light absorbed is around 500 nm. Yellow and green lights are absorbed to excite the electron. Complimentary coloured light is transmitted. The complimentary colour is purple (red blue). Hence, the complex [Ti(H2O)6]3+ is purple in colour.
